Two Conservative heavy-hitters have in recent days come out strongly in favour of compulsory sports in schools in an effort to create the next generation of Olympic hopefuls. Boris Johnson, London's lively Mayor, yesterday announced that the introduction of "2 hours of daily PE" should be on the Government's schools agenda in the coming weeks.
On the back of Team GB's most successful Olympic medal haul ever, it seems sport has seized the headlines in the most positive way possible, making a welcome change from coverage of ungrateful, overpaid and melodramatic footballers....!
Former PM John Major also came down firmly on the side of more sport in schools by saying that every school should have a dedicated PE teacher.
This can certainly be seen as an upbraiding for the Government which, back in 2010, saw fit to scrap funding for the fantastic School Sports Partnerships structure that oversaw and encouraged participation in a huge variety of sports for so many children and young people up and down the country.
Back in July 2010, Skipping4Schools worked closely alongside 13 Lancashire SSPs to deliver our Skip4Life campaign which was hugely successful as well as great fun.
