Should there be more emphasis on physical literacy in our primary schools?

"Physical literacy is the development of fundamental movement skills and fundamental sport skills that permit a child to move confidently and with control in a wide range of physical activity, rhythmic (dance) and sport situations. Physical literacy also includes the ability to “read” what is going on around them in an activity setting and react appropriately to those events. "

A brilliant quote that sums up our approach to how we teach skipping in schools. We believe that skipping is not only a Fundamental Movement Skill but it is also a Fundamental Improvement Tool.

By this we mean that the many components that create the ideal skipping step are all essential elements that are prevalent in many traditional sports. And children ought to be learning the fundamental movement skills before they learn to apply them in the more traditional arena of 'grown up' sports and games.

Let us show you how.....

- Skipping is Fundamental Movement Skill that can help boost core stability, coordination and body awareness
- You can use Skipping as a warm up tool ahead of any PE activities
- Just 5 mins Skipping every morning and 5 mins each afternoon improves stamina levels
- Skipping is all-inclusive because anyone can skip. FACT: the more time on the rope, the better the skipper
- Skipping really helps to improve hand/eye coordination!
- Skipping is great for Football, Hockey, Rugby and Netball as it helps build stamina
- Skipping can help to develop nimble footwork skills for tennis, basketball, netball, boxing among many other sports
- Skipping builds core stability and assists in everyday movement as well as developing poise for dancers and athletes
- Distract the children while they're skipping and they'll skip for twice as long!
- Once you've got the ropes, you just need your imagination….
